FAQs

Why do I need a Driving Instructor?

It’s important to learn how to drive safely right from the beginning. You should always look for a DVLA Approved Driving Instructor – they are specially trained to teach you what you need to know to become a confident and safe driver on the road, and pass your test.

What will I need to bring for my first lesson?

Other than a smile and a positive attitude towards learning, please bring your provisional driving license, corrective lenses (if needed) and some sensible footwear…. preferably comfortable shoes or trainers that aren’t cooler than mine. We’ll spend some time at the beginning of your first lesson confirming your details, and going over some basics, but I promise you’ll be out on the open road in no time.

Do you offer automatic lessons?

I believe learning to drive with a manual transmission helps students understand how a car works, including engine behaviour and the relationship between speed and gears – with the added benefit of not having to upgrade your automatic car licence to a manual car licence should you need to later. Mastering a manual can make you a more skilled driver in challenging conditions after you’ve past your test, such as in snowy or hilly terrain, where selecting the right gear can enhance traction and control. Manual cars often have lower purchase prices and maintenance costs compared to automatics – making them your ideal first car! If you’d still prefer to learn to drive in an automatic car, I should be able to point you in the right direction of another local Driving Instructor.

How many lessons will I need before my driving test?

The number of driving lessons you’ll need can vary widely depending on factors like your previous experience, comfort level, and how quickly you learn. On average, they say many learners may need around 40+ hours of professional instruction before they are at test standard. When you learn to drive with me we’ll regularly discuss your progress and goals. I’ll also be encouraging you to practice your theory at home, so that you can get the most out of your time in the car with me and booked in for your practical test as soon as possible.

How do I book my driving test?

Woah there! You’ll need to pass your theory test first! You can book both your theory test and practical driving tests online at GOV.UK website, or over the phone.

Can I take my driving test using my own car?

Yes, you can take your driving test in your own car instead of your driving instructor’s, providing your car has a valid MOT and insurance, meets the GOV.UK Rules for using your own car for your test. It’s recommended you use a vehicle that you are already comfortable and familiar with, so if you are intending to hire mine, please please remember to check my availability beforehand. And don’t forget to double check your time/dates and location so that we can have you at the right place at the right time.

How long will my driving test take?

About 40–50 minutes. Your Driving Examiner will take you through an eyesight check and safety questions before a section of independent driving. You are allowed a carer, close friend or Driving Instructor to accompany you on your driving test, providing they are respectfully silent and do not interact or engage with any element that might compromise your test.

If I fail my driving test, how long before I can re-book and do it again?

Hopefully you won’t fail your driving test, but if you do, you must wait at least 10 full working days (that’s excluding Sundays and Bank Holidays) before taking it again.

Can I drive as soon as I pass my practical driving test?

Yes! Technically you can start driving as soon as you’ve passed your practical test. Hoorah! You don’t need to wait for your full licence to arrive, but do make sure you have updated your insurance as a full licence holder.
